Adoption Process & Fees

Adoption Process: Because it is so important for CDR to be sure that we are placing these dogs into the best possible homes, the adoption process has several steps.
1) Fill in an application
2) CDR will review the application & assign you a volunteer to handle the screening process.  They will contact you for a phone interview.  This allows both CDR and the potential adopter to ask questions and make sure a rescue doxie will be the right fit for their home.
3) CDR will contact your references.
4) CDR will perform a home visit to assess suitability of your home.
5) A final decision on approval is made.  CDR will contact you to let you know if you have been approved or not.
6) If approved a CDR volunteer will continue to work with you to find the right dog for you and your family.   You will not be rushed to take a dog immediately if there are none in care who are suitable.
7) Approved adopter gets their forever dog!

NOTE: if at any time during this process you decide that you do not want to move forward, please let us know so we can move on to other applicants.

Adoption Fees:  Fees vary by age, please see the list below.
Under 1 year: $400
1 to 4 years:   $350
5 to 10 years: $300
10+ years:      $250

Why there are fees for “unwanted” dogs?  Because adoption fees save lives. Canadian Dachshund Rescue is an entirely volunteer run not-for-profit organization. All dogs are spayed/neutered and vaccinated before adoption.  Many require much more veterinary attention while in our care.  These vet visits often cost significantly more than the adoption fee. Adoption fees and our ongoing fundraising initiatives allow us to save more dogs each day.
Canadian Dachshund Rescue has had several foster dogs that have required back surgery. At $3500-$5000 each time, that’s an awful lot of bake sales.
Here are some average costs for routine vet care procedures done on our rescue dogs: Spay: $230 OR  Neuter: $130
Vaccinations: $65
Heartworm Testing &Prevention: $30 + $10/month
Other Parasite Testing & Treatment: $45
Flea Control: $10
Total: $325 to $425
